FAT-PROOF YOUR KIDS

The statistics are astounding. There is an obesity epidemic in our nation. Children are not immune and we have no vaccine against this disease which has both a high mortality rate (it kills) and morbidity rate (it makes you sick and also can make you feel miserable about yourself).

But there are three things parents can do to help their children develop resistance to this epidemic.

• TURN IT OFF!

• THROW ‘EM OUT!

• CUT IT OUT!

TURN OFF THE TV. There is a high correlation between TV watching and obesity. Watching TV requires you use only your eye muscles which doesn’t burn up any calories. TV encourages mindless eating. TV advertising encourages purchases of unhealthy snack foods.

THROW THE KIDS OUTDOORS. Play is exercise. Parents can rev up their kids exercise motors by taking long family walks, encouraging extracurricular sports, and working with their children’s schools to improve and increase physical education programs.

CUT OUT THE JUNK FOOD. Throw out what you have in your house now. It’s OK to toss the Easter candy as well as the stale stuff from Halloween. And, trust me, your kids will survive nect year even if you refuse to fill the cupboards at every minor and major holiday.

– Don’t buy any more junk food. Parents tell me they know their kids eat junk at school and at friend’s houses so it’s hopeless. Not true. My observations tell me most school children eat most of the junk food they consume at home as well as at movies and sports events. Parents control what goes into the shopping cart. The parental dollar also controls what kids eat at the movies.

– Don’t wimp out. If you don’t have any chips around the kids will eat carrots with ranch dressing dip (use low-fat sour cream). If you limit what they can spend at the movies kids chose between a small candy and a small popcorn but don’t get both. I’ve seen this with my own eyes!
