PARENTING JOB DESCRIPTION

Have you ever wondered why kids don’t come with owner’s manuals? When we start out doing the most important job in the world, no one even provides us with a parenting job description?

Let me take a crack at the basic PARENTING JOB DESCRIPTION. This is an outline of what I think is vitally important. Think about it; fill in the ways you can do a good job in your family and in your house.

People who are parents should already have, or be prepared to quickly learn, the following:

o The ability to be responsible and postpone gratification

o The ability and willingness to provide nurturing care to a child who needs it whether a helpless creature, a sassy kid, or even an obnoxious teenager

o The capacity to love and enjoy your children

o The guts to be an in-charge parent

o The ability to cope and be flexible

o A passion to teach

o Empathy

o Patience

o A sense of humor

o Confidence in yourself as parent which comprises both self-awareness and an understanding of the limits of parenting

o A few basic skills, which you bring to parenting or learn on-the-job, for dealing with common everyday parenting challenges:

1) Knowledge of children including how they develop and their needs at different stages of their lives

2) Communication skills

3) How to control yourself and your temper

4) How to make a living

5) A willingness to reach for and accept professional help when you’re stuck

The list is short; the implications are enormous.
